Artworld Power Player: Jeff Koons

There is art and then there is the art world, James Yood firmly stated at the beginning of the Evening Salon with Jeff Koons. The art world was definitely buzzing for hours leading up to this event in which artist Jeff Koons, critic and SAIC Adjunct Professor in Art History, Theory and Criticism James Yood, and art collector Stefan Edlis would sit on a panel discussion together.

Censorship Overload!

An artist is somebody who is armed with a camera or paintbrush, using these media to render some aspect of their life. So why are artists such a threat?

It’s Fair

By the time you are reading this, the Art Chicago in the Park and the first annual Chicago Contemporary and Classic weekend will already be over and done with. Just like that an art fair comes and goes. Art Basel is the olympics of art fairs and epitomizes the fabric of the artworld. Artist and SAIC alum Mike Langlois explains just how central art fairs like Basel have become.

Taking risks

Each year, only weeks before the BFA and MFA shows rumors begin to fly concerning one or two students whose work is called into question by SAIC officials. To show or not to show? That is the question.

Speaking of good deeds…

A benefit auction to raise money for artist Steve Kurtz and scientist Robert Ferrell's defense fund was held on April 17 at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York City.

MOMA Rules

Like a powerful leader of a country, the Museum of Modern Art dominates the art world. I almost feel like MOMA warrants its own regular news column. Since the reopening this past fall, after an $858 million dollar expansion, MOMA is still making headlines.

Losing My Mind

Just when I couldn't take it anymore, my friend and F News editor Manda, like a ray of hope, says to me the other day, Michelle, I forgot to tell you: your book came months ago. Ahhhh, Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art.

Can’t Keep It Up

The question arises: If the work is good, why doesn't it stay up? The truth is that while Banksy makes this institutional critique, the art world is not ready to change the system. Being able to put your own art on the walls still seems too chaotic and is anti-(museum) establishment.
