[Sivan]

Hi, I’m Siv. I’m the News Editor at F Newsmagazine at SAC, and today we’ll be interviewing students selling their work at the art sale.

[F Newsmagazine video title card plays]

Text on screen: The Spring Art Sale is the second of SAIC’s two annual art sales. Students are able to sell their work, and gain vending experience. Let’s have a look at what was there!

[Sivan]

Can you tell us your name and your pronouns?

[Desiree]

My name is Desiree Roth. My pronouns are she/her.

[Sivan]

Your year that you’re graduating and your department.

[Desiree]

I am in my final year. I’m graduating this semester, so 2026, and I am in the fashion department.

[Sivan; a text title card covers the screen while they speak]

Is this your first time running for the art sale?

[Desiree]

This is my third semester doing the art sale. I took a break last semester, and then I did it twice in my junior year.

[Dove]

Dove, they/them. My department is in printing. I also do painting, and then I’m graduating this year.

[Sivan]

Awesome. And is this your first art sale?

[Dove]

Yeah.

[Sivan]

How are you feeling about that?

[Dove]

Really good. I thought I wasn’t going to sell anything, but I sold quite a few things.

[Aaliyah]

Hi, my name is Aaliyah Lachelle Merrick. [indistinct] I use she/they pronouns. This year I’m graduating, so 2026 in May. I’m really excited. I’m in the drawing and painting department. I’ve sold at the SAC art sale three times before, so last fall and then last spring, but this will be my last time getting to do it.

[Eli]

My name’s Eli Zinn, and I use any pronouns.

[Gogo]

My name’s Gogo, go by she/her.

[Eli]

I’m graduating this May, and I’m mainly in the Fibers and Materials Studies department.

[Gogo]

And I graduated last year.

[Eli]

No, actually, we were selling bikinis last year as well. We were selling it last year, the same thing, but this year we have more stuff.

[Demi]

Hi, my name is Demis Hedrakian. I use she, they pronouns, and I’m a senior in the BFA in studio, and my departments are ceramics and painting. This is my second time.

[Sivan; a text title card covers the screen while they speak]

And how would you say, like, comparison this art sale to the past ones?

[Desiree]

I would say there’s not as many people as there usually is, especially the winter one always has more people, because they always schedule it when the Christmas tree lighting ceremony is. It doesn’t matter because the people are good.

[Aaliyah]

I’m having a great time here this time around. I don’t know if it’s because I changed my display, or maybe I’ve just got, like, senioritis. No, I’m just excited to be here. And for right now, the sale is going really good. I’m seeing a lot of returning customers who were, like, excited to see what I’ve been doing for the past year. And I don’t know, that just feels really good.

[Eli]

Definitely this year feels, like, more slow. There are less people than last year. There were a lot of people, just in general, but this year definitely feels a bit slower, for sure.

[Demi]

I think I sold in the fall sale for the first time, and that one, I feel, always goes a little bit better. You know, there’s Christmas happening. People are excited to get gifts. But I think the ambiance is a little bit different here because of the coming of spring. It’s very sweet. People are excited. Like, different things sell, it feels like. But it’s been great.

[Sivan; a text title card covers the screen while they speak]

And can you tell us about a specific piece, story behind it, how you made it?

[Desiree]

So this is my first ever wood accessory that I made. I made it a year ago in March. It is all made out of recycled wood, recycled poplar, and recycled cherry. The chain is made out of one solid piece of wood and is hand-carved. And then the center part right here is steam-bent in layers, and then those layers are then bent, laminated, glued together. And then the sides are hand-carved and hand-shaped. And then the little feet at the bottom are also hand-carved and hand-sanded. And then you can follow me at @DesireeStudios.

[Dove]

So this is Multidog. Multidog is also here and here. Multidog is an experiment that was done in the 1940s and 50s by Vladimir Demikhov, where he stitched two dogs together. And they share a heart, and they can also breathe out of the same pair of lungs. And this is my baby. I’m really interested in, like, keeping the memory of the dogs alive. So I think, you know, if we forget about these dogs and their contributions for science, then they die a second time. So that’s what I mainly focus on.

So it’s @MDov, which is M-D-0-V-3.

[Aaliyah]

I make comics and zines here at SAIC. I started doing that since I’ve been here. This is Big Gulp. It’s about a little girl who has a crush on her 7-Eleven clerk. And she’s trying to figure that out. And it’s risograph printed, the cover is vellum, and it was just a feat of, like, printing and assembly. And it was hard to make. And I’ve done comic readings of it, and people are really moved by it. And, I don’t know, it feels… I’m very proud of it. I’m proud of stuff that takes a long time.

[Gogo]

Yeah, like, for that one [gesturing to the piece behind them; a bikini made of watches and chain], it’s our specific one. And, you know, it was already picked by a showroom in Los Angeles. Yeah, and I just walked into the showroom and just introduced myself and my stuff.

I just got an opportunity to cooperate with the showroom. So, yeah, I sell the piece at a very low price in our sales. But, usually, it sells at the showroom. It comes at, like, $300 or $400.

[Eli]

This piece is our most popular piece. Because it’s been featured in people’s photoshoots, So, the Instagram account, @BadShowroom, which I think it’s, like, a curated space in Los Angeles. So, they have that on their account.

[Sivan]

Can you tell us about your, like, working relationship?

[Eli]

Yeah! Oh, my God. No. She’s everything to me.

[Gogo]

Oh, my God.

[Eli]

She’s everything to me. Honestly, she was the first person, like, she came up to me first. Because we were in the same fibers class together. But I’m so glad that we are in this together. We’ve done so much. We’ve come so far, you know, and she has done such amazing work. Honestly, you know, she does all the heavy lifting. Our Instagram is @Anti6. That’s why our pricing, most of them, ends with, like, a 9. Because we don’t use 6.

[Sivan]

That’s awesome.

[Demi]

Some of my favorites are some reduction fired work. So, it’s this specifically.

This is a style of firing that removes all of the oxygen from the kiln. So, it’s a different atmosphere. And you get these, like, rich colors. You get these bright reds. This piece is also one of those in a reduction firing. So, that’s kind of a place where you get a lot of fun. Almost sparkling, too, in the glaze. My Instagram is @de.mi__art. And you can also find more of my work on my website, which is Demisedrakian, just my full name, dot com.
