Luma’s World – Animation Anxieties

The cognitive dissonance between the industry and pursuing a creative degree fills Luma with fear in the first installment of Luma’s World by Sidne K. Gard.

By Comics, Featured Comics

Panel One: Luma, a girl with pink hair and a grey hoodie stares into the middle distance with a horrified expression. A small black bird is on her right and looking up at her. Luma and the bird have a conversation, with the bird’s speech bubbles written in white text on a black background and Luma’s in black text with a pink background. The bird says “Luma?” and Luma responds “...yeah?” The bird then asks “What’s wrong with your face?” Panel Two: A close up of Luma’s face. She now has tears in her eyes. Her face fills the bottom third of the panel with the top 2/3rds being filled with a large white speech bubble. Luma goes on a small rant saying, “HBO Max erased 37 animated TV shows like they were nothing. 37 shows! Without even warning the creators or anyone who worked on them. And I have to go back to art college in 3 days. What’s the point of creating when a whole generation of my artform was erased in a moment’s notice?”  Panel Three: Luma is standing in the same spot as she was in the first panel but now has tears down her face and is looking at the bird. The bird asks, “...would watching your Adventure Time DVD help?” To which Luma replies, “It might…” The bird says “I’ll make popcorn.”
