This is a 6-panel comic that details the artist’s experiences with cooking salmon with their foster puppy, Whimsy.
Panel 1: The header reads “1) Let the foster puppy sniff,” demonstrating the first step of beginning to cook. The image depicts an arm and hands holding a piece of salmon near the puppy’s nose for her to sniff. The speech bubbles read “I don’t need to sniff every single thing you eat, mom,” “You quite literally tried eating a solid flat wall, Whimsy,” and “Woof woof.”
Panel 2: The header reads “2) put her back into her playpen” and an image of a grey playpen is shown. The dog is inside the playpen. The speech bubble says “Woof woof woof.”
Panel 3: Panel three has images of a grey refrigerator with a pink calendar, some notes, magnets, and images of a cat. There are images of arugula, lettuce, cherry tomato, onion, potato, and garlic to the right of the fridge, which shows the vegetables that are going to be used when cooking the salmon. The header says “3) Defrost salmon, slice veggies while you wait.” Each drawing of a vegetable is presented together with their names, while potatoes say “Potatoes (Yukon Gold)” and garlic says “Garlic (3 cloves, get ready to stink.)Panel 4: This panel has three clocks showing the passing of time. It reads “I had to put sliced veggies back into the fridge as defrosting was taking longer than usual. The veggies started going bad.” There are two speech bubbles that say “Defrosting takes forever, Whimsy,” and “Woof woof”
Panel 5: Panel five is a close up to a blue pan with the salmon and the vegetables inside. Each vegetable has arrows coming out of them, labeling what each of them are. “Lettuce,” “arugula,” “tomato,” “potato,” “caramelized onions” and lastly, “Italian olive oil.” The header says “4) Add everything in, cook on medium heat,” visually depicting the fourth step of cooking salmon. There is a page of yellow paper to the right of the pan that lists the spices that were used with the fish: “Spice List: thyme, oregano, cumin, red pepper, poppy seeds, sesame.”
Panel 6: The final panel shows a large brown table with a computer, the cooked salmon, tea cup, and a water bottle. The header explains the last step of cooking: “5) Transfer your salmon onto a plate. Bonus points if you eat from the pan, it feels even fancier.” To the left of the table, there is a text saying “Today’s me time:” There are arrows drawn below the items on the table that help detail what each of them are. “Netflix as self-care,” “My 3 hours of hard work,” “Nettle tea,” and “My Brita.” There is a text below the table reading “Don’t forget to give your pup a bite.”
