Art theft in River North

Chicago artist and gallery owner Gerald Griffin found something amiss and missing from his River North gallery early on Thursday, April 6. Chicago police officers responded to a burglar alarm that sounded at about 5 a.m. at Griffin Gallery on West Ontario Street. Arriving on the scene, they found one of the gallery’s doors had been pried opened and called the gallerist. Griffin confirmed that three bronze statues, worth an estimated of $60,000, were missing.

Police are continuing their investigation of the heist. Griffin, a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, also operates a gallery in Hyde Park that showcases work from his own 20-year career in painting and sculpture, as well as work by other prominent artists.
