July 10, 2007SOUND IN NATURE

Through September 30th, MFA 1995 Mark Booth’s newest sound piece will be installed at the Lincoln Park Conservatory. Among exotic trees and lush palms, Booth’s work will accompany the residents of the century-old conservatory. The Conservatory is always free, and is located at Fullerton and Lincoln Park. Booth is part of the experimental musical “collective” Tiny Hairs. Last but not least, he also creates works on paper; check out work from his solo show last year at Bodybuilder & Sportsman.

MORE THAN JUST SOME PRETTY BOOKS

Shin Yu (Doris) Pai, MFA in Writing, 1999, has, in the way of many SAIC alumni, combined visual art and writing in her recent work, publishing two letterpress books of poetry. The first, Works on Paper, is described by the publisher, Convivio Bookworks, as “a most unusual book,” printed in an edition of only 125. It is her sixth book of poetry, all of which are printed using traditional Japanese dyes and papers. Works on Paper is bound in an accordian-like “concertina” structure.

Her previous book was published in January of this year by 1913 Press, and is entitled Sightings: Selected Works [2000-2005]. Pai’s meticulously crafted books of poetry clearly reflect her combined talents; she teaches poetry at several Texas universities while showing her work in the visual arts in venues nationwide.
