America has had a long-standing tradition, or, rather, obsession with quantifying
and qualifying humanity’s different attributes in list form. From the Constitution
to the “Star Spangled Banner,” we, as a people, have a compulsive
desire to break down the auxiliary world into bite-sized mass consumption. It
is not hard to see why. Lists are fun, easy to read and, above all, they illicit
honest responses deep within us. How many times do you find yourself staring at
a list of the “most influential” this, and “worst all-time”
that, vehemently agreeing or lambasting the nerve of whoever wrote such a thing?
Lists put you in a position of high power, above the presumed power of whoever
wrote it in the first place. A list-maker might hold a “know-it-all”
claim, but ultimately it is the reader who has the last opinion on the subject.
LA Weekly produced its third annual “List Issue” in December, as a
way of embracing the tendency of mass media to put the past year into lists for
easier reflection upon entering the new year. Based on their idea, while adding
our own F News flourishes and maintaining our usual programming, we present F’s
1st List Issue.
10 Reasons why F News is biting LA Weekly's "List" issue:
- What list issue?
- We want to make Nicholas Cage feel at home while he is shooting
"The Weatherman"
- List lobbyists have no gag reflex, we couldn't say no
- We just learned how to count
- What LA?
- It's not "biting," it's "appropriation"
- Because we can only do one issue on consumerism a year
- Thieves took the F Puppy and are holding him ransom
- Lists are low in carbs
- We just want to be loved
