An Andean Charango

An Andean Charango

The Charango is an Andean 10-stringed instrument of the lute family. Historically, the bodies of these instruments are made out of armadillo shells, though new charangos are typically built of wood. I had never heard of the charango before I discovered one (of armadillo shell) hanging on the wall of a world music shop in New York City, but now I’d like to introduce it you. The first video is my own attempt at playing one, and the second is an impressive display of what can be done with this beautiful and strange instrument.
