Shouldn’t every political cartoonist in the U.S. be drawing pictures of birds with little thermometers in their beaks by now? Shouldn’t the op ed section of the Tribune be cluttered with bombastic, call-in-radio-show-host type commentaries about why Avian Influenza isn’t being taken seriously? Shouldn’t shut-in art students who go out of their way to be uninvolved with current events and the world at large be making bleeding-heart pieces exploiting the idea of virus-riddled corpses by now?

For two weeks, the media was awash with coverage of the hurricane that devastated large parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, exposed a much-ignored level of poverty in the south, and raised the bar for free speech. What follows is a small sample of some of the hilarious, misguided, atrocious, inflammatory and plain old stupid things that columnists, radio hosts, politicians, their wives, policy hacks and other public figures have said in the aftermath of Katrina.

This semester, SAIC has begun yet another attempt at a school-wide recycling program. The program provides every floor and lounge in the 112 S. Michigan building with a color-coded system of recycling bins, with the intention that the bins will create an inescapable visual presence.
