Stephen Daiter Gallery Opens Fashion Photography Exhibit

seven decades of fashion photographers present a wide variety of views

By Uncategorized

A couple weeks ago I blogged about a Balenciaga exhibit opening in NYC, highlighted by my lamentations about the lack of fashion exhibition in US museums. If fashion exhibitions are lacking in our museums, it’s safe to say that fashion photography is nearly nonexistent. As our arts editor, Ania Szremski, so poignantly stated, “We are a meat and potatoes type of people.” A reality that apparently leaves little room for fashion.

Thus you can imagine how excited I was when Ania handed me a press release for a new fashion photography exhibit,  “After a Fashion: Classic, Humorous, Subversive…” opening on November 5 at the Stephen Daiter Gallery (until  December 30) — the gallery’s first ever fashion oriented exhibition.

According to their website, the work in “After a Fashion” includes fifty or so photographic works by over twenty artists,  [which] span seven decades and have been very carefully selected to represent a variety of views on the subject – from  some thought-provoking images (including one by Carrie Mae Weems) involving the introduction and induction of  young girls to the world of beauty and fashion, to Robert Heinecken’s heretical inversions of magazine spreads –  undermining the very pictures he so carefully presents.”

Needless to say, I’m pretty thrilled.

Come with me to the opening on November 5, from 5-8pm, at the Stephen Daiter Gallery (230 W. Superior, Fourth  Floor) where there will be a reception with some of the artists.
